The Best Chasen is an authentic bamboo whisk hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. This traditional tool—essential to Japanese tea ceremony since the 12th century—creates the perfect whisking action to achieve that signature silky froth.

Each whisk features delicate, curved prongs (tines) that aerate and blend matcha effortlessly, transforming powder into a creamy, lump-free cup. Because every chasen is individually handcrafted, there are natural variations in size and shape—another beautiful expression of wabi-sabi.

Your whisk is unique—a small reminder of the artisan who crafted it. After a few uses, the centre tines may naturally straighten slightly, which is completely normal and doesn't affect performance.

HOW TO USE

How to Bloom Your Whisk: Before first use and periodically during its life, "bloom" your whisk by placing it in warm water for 30 seconds. This softens the bamboo tines and prepares them for whisking, whilst also extending the life of your chasen.

How to Use:

  1. Bloom your whisk in warm water for 30 seconds
  2. Sift 1-3g (one perfect scoop) of matcha into your bowl
  3. Add 60-80ml of hot water (70-80°C)
  4. Whisk briskly in a zigzag or "M" motion until beautifully frothy (15-20 seconds)
  5. Enjoy your perfectly smooth matcha

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Care Instructions: Rinse with warm water after each use and allow to air dry completely on a whisk stand. Never use soap or put in the dishwasher, as this can damage the bamboo. Store on a whisk holder (kusenaoshi) to maintain its shape and extend its life.
