In exclusive collaboration with the talented Jess Hollin of Clay & Canvas, we have created handcrafted ceramic kusenaoshi (whisk stands) that honour traditional form whilst adding understated beauty to your matcha ritual. In Japanese tea culture, the kusenaoshi serves a vital purpose — it preserves the shape of your bamboo chasen between uses, helping it last longer and perform at its best. These pieces are unique to Best at Matcha — you will not find them anywhere else.

HOW TO USE

How to Care for Your Whisk (Using Your Suna Kusenaoshi):

  1. After whisking: Rinse your bamboo chasen under warm water — never use soap
  2. Gently reshape: If tines have splayed during use, gently coax them back to their natural curved position
  3. Place on stand: Set your chasen prongs-down into the Suna Kusenaoshi
  4. Air dry completely: Allow air to circulate around the tines — this is essential for bamboo health
  5. Store properly: Keep your chasen on the kusenaoshi between uses to maintain its optimal shape

Creating Your Perfect Bowl of Matcha:
Before you begin, place your chasen in warm water for 30 seconds to soften the tines (this is called "blooming" your whisk). Sift 1–3g (one perfect scoop) of matcha into your chawan, add 60–80ml of hot water (70–80°C), then whisk briskly in a zigzag or "M" motion until beautifully frothy. After use, rinse your chasen and return it to the Suna Kusenaoshi to dry.
