Description

The Marui Bowl carries centuries of Japanese pottery tradition in every curve. Handcrafted in the kilns of Yamai Pottery Co., Ltd. in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture — one of Japan's most revered ceramic-producing regions — each chawan is shaped by master potter Hiromitsu Ito using traditional Mino-yaki techniques passed down through generations.

This authentic chawan features the perfect proportions for traditional matcha preparation: a wide opening for full, unhindered whisking motion, gently curved walls that guide your chasen naturally, and a foot ring (koudai) that sits comfortably in your palm.

Each bowl bears the subtle marks of its making — natural variations in glaze, form and finish that embody the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi (侘寂). These are not imperfections; they are the beautiful signature of human artistry and the unique story of your chawan.

HOW TO USE
  1. Warm your chawan: Pour hot water into the bowl to warm the ceramic (this also blooms your chasen)
  2. Empty and dry: Discard the water and gently dry the interior
  3. Sift your matcha: Add 1–3g (one perfect scoop) of matcha through a sieve
  4. Add water: Pour 60–80ml of hot water (70–80°C)
  5. Whisk: Hold the chawan steady with one hand whilst whisking briskly in a zigzag motion until frothy
  6. Enjoy mindfully: Cradle the bowl in both hands and savour the moment

After use, rinse with warm water and allow to air dry. Never use soap or put in the dishwasher, as this can damage the delicate glaze.

Handcrafted at Yamai Pottery Co., Ltd. (有限会社やまい伊藤製陶所) by master potter Hiromitsu Ito in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. Toki is located in the heart of Mino ware country — one of Japan's most important ceramic production regions, renowned for pottery since the 7th century. Yamai Pottery continues this proud tradition, creating authentic matcha chawan using time-honoured techniques whilst embracing subtle contemporary refinements.

The Kobiki technique involves applying a white slip (liquid clay) before the final glaze, creating depth and luminosity. Each bowl is wheel-thrown, hand-finished, and kiln-fired — a process requiring exceptional skill and patience. Due to the handcrafted nature, slight variations in size, glaze, and finish are to be expected and celebrated as marks of authenticity.

Approximately 12cm diameter × 7.5cm height. Food-safe ceramic. Hand wash only; not suitable for microwave or dishwasher.
